Illicit cigarettes worth of RM 1 million smuggling foiled by Sabah Customs

LAHAD DATU —  Royal Malaysian Customs intercepted an attempt to smuggle illicit cigarettes (have not paid duty or tax) worth of RM 1,625,728 at Jalan Silam.

Assistant Director for Sabah Custom, Datuk Abdullah Jaapar said “Based on information and intelligence report, a team from enforcement unit stopped an Isuzu lorry at 2.45pm traveling from Tawau to Lahad Datu.

“A 27 years old driver was detained and inspection over the lorry shows it contained cigarettes of different brands.

“We found 17,408,00 cigarettes,” he said in a statement.

Posing as delivery item, it is a smuggling technique used by them to avoid authority evasion, Abdullah said.

“This is the first and biggest seize during the Movement Control Order”

The suspect is under remand for 14 days and investigated for Customs Act 1967 and Excise Act 1967.
