Two men smuggling RM 1.5 million valued cigarettes detained

SANDAKAN – Two men arrested for smuggling cigarette worth of RM 1.5 million during an inspection near Beluran.

The suspects, aged 34 and 38 tried to smuggle via a lorry container en route from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu.

When the suspects were stopped at the roadblock, the police found them to be suspicious, PGA Commanding Officer Batalion 15 Sandakan, Superintendent Toipi Lamat said.

“Suspect lied to the police of forgetting to bring the key to open the back of the container, naturally raising more doubts.

“Another suspect aged 34, when arrived later to the location of the roadblock, refused to co-operate with the police for further check of the container.”

“Finally, they confessed there were illegal cigarettes in the container,” he said on a statement.

Both suspects arrested and will be probed under the Customs Act 1967.

Earlier, for breaching the Movement Control Order roadblock, both suspects were also booked for the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.
